I create from the inbetween, where fragments collide and dissolve, identities shift and murmur, rewritten from latent spaces of forgotten data. My work is born from tension: construction and deconstruction, noise and clarity, order and its collapse. The moment when ambiguity unfolds, before it becomes memory — like a glitch that refuses to be ignored. ──── Since 1993, I am working across diverse fields of media art — from early experimental videos to deconstructed online narratives, audiovisual animations, interactive installations and AI-generated images. ──── I was always drawn to failure, the moment when the machine’s rigidity falters, when its precision unravels into unpredictability, revealing something raw, almost human—a space where ghosts seem to emerge from its circuits, neither fully mechanical nor entirely alive. Inbetween these tensions I create my own narrations and digital creatures that haunt the fringes of our media world. It’s not about fantasy (I hate fantasy fiction!) — but about the inescapable presence of the machine: its logic, its mistakes, and its whispers of the unknown. ──── It’s a space where data dreams and memory deforms, a space charged with both excitement and unease. “Haunting is an inherent property of media; it is the spectral presence that technology both reveals and conceals.” (Jeffrey Scone, Haunted Media) ────
Ich schaffe aus dem Dazwischen, wo Fragmente aufeinanderprallen und sich auflösen, Identitäten sich verschieben und flüstern, neu geschrieben aus latenten Räumen vergessener Daten. Meine Arbeit entsteht aus Spannung: Konstruktion und Dekonstruktion, Lärm und Klarheit, Ordnung und ihr Zusammenbruch. Der Moment, in dem sich Mehrdeutigkeit entfaltet, bevor sie zur Erinnerung wird – wie ein Fehler, der sich nicht ignorieren lässt. ──── Seit 1993 arbeite ich in verschiedenen Bereichen der Medienkunst – von frühen experimentellen Videos bis hin zu dekonstruierten Online-Erzählungen, audiovisuellen Animationen, interaktiven Installationen und KI-generierten Bildern. ──── Ich war schon immer von Fehlschlägen fasziniert, von dem Moment, in dem die Starrheit der Maschine ins Wanken gerät, in dem ihre Präzision sich in Unvorhersehbarkeit auflöst und etwas Rohes, fast Menschliches zum Vorschein kommt – ein Raum, in dem Geister aus ihren Schaltkreisen zu entspringen scheinen, weder ganz mechanisch noch ganz lebendig. Zwischen diesen Spannungen schaffe ich meine eigenen Erzählungen und digitalen Kreaturen, die die Randbereiche unserer Medienwelt heimsuchen. Esther Hunziker ist Künstlerin, Mediengestalterin und Dozentin für digitale Medien am Institut Kunst in Basel. Sie hat Modedesign studiert und anschliessend Videokunst an der Fachklasse für audiovisuelle Gestaltung an der SfG HGK in Basel. Seit 1996 arbeitet sie als freie Mediengestalterin und Künstlerin im Bereich digitale Medien. Ihre Arbeiten umfassen die Bereiche Video, Fotografie, Animation, Installation und interaktive online Arbeiten.
Die medienübergreifenden Arbeiten der Künstlerin basieren meist auf Dekonstruktion und Montage, wo scheinbare Realitäten auf reale Scheinwelten treffen. Sie lässt dabei vermeintlich Gegensätzliches wie das Normale und Aussergewöhnliche, das Glaubwürdige und Unglaubliche, das Rationalen und Irrationale, das Irdische und Ausserirdische aufeinanderprallen und erschafft aus diesen Schnittmengen ganz eigene digitale Kreaturen und Erzählungen.
Esther Hunziker is an artist, media designer and lecturer on digital media at the Art Institute in Basel. She studied fashion design and video art at the Department of Audiovisual Design at the SfG HGK in Basel. Since 1996 she works as a media designer and artist in the field of digital media. Her work includes video, photography, animation, installation and interactive online projects.
The artist’s interdisciplinary work is mostly based on deconstruction and montage, where she often mixes the real with the illusory world; she lets collide supposed opposites, such as as the normal and the extraordinary, the usual and the unknown, the authentic and the fake, the earthly and the alien, and builds her own digital creatures and narratives, — somewhere inbetween.
