The Immortal Monster (1959).

The 24-part photo-series so, anyway shows illustrations of faces that have been rubbed away, uncannily, partially covered over and replaced with the textures of meteorites: faces turning to stone in a paradoxically fluid, brimming manner. This perception is emphasised with the installation of the photo-series in proximity to a clip from the science-fiction film Caltiki. The Immortal Monster (1959). We stand ‘shuddering’ in front of the film clip in which an uncannily breathing, uncannily growing ‘monster’ breaks out of its terrarium. But the effect of the photographs is worse still because of the strange connection between sprawl, erasure and petrification. While the interiors with their digital equipment are clearly recognisable as streamers’ ‘homes’, the beings in the foreground made up from numer- ous interlocking or coalescing parts evade any possible definition. They might be portraits, but that which defines a portrait – the face, the signs of individuality – is missing. And even though the pictures are nicely framed and hung in a row, the shapes in the pictures seem to emerge, uncanny and unbridled, from out of their frames. They come out at us like Caltiki, the monster […].
